Have you heard of Professor Dylan William? He's worth checking out...for his intellectual acumen of course!

"It is assessment for learning rather than assessment of learning." Professor Dylan William

"We need to focus on feedback that moves students forward, rather than telling them where they are . After all, they can do nothing about where they are currently in their learning, but they can do something about where they end up."
Professor Dylan William

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege to attend a keynote conference at Hillview with Professor Dylan William - deputy Director of The Institute of Education on 'Assessment for Learning'. I have been teaching for 13 years, and this was one of the best CPD opportunities I have participated in. It was like being back at university and coming away from a lecture that turned your world upside down. Potent, deeply persuasive and thought provoking, I left inspired and armed with a plethora of insightful research evidence and practical ideas that could transform AfL at Welling School. As a member of ALT, I have been working closely with colleagues to explore the success of DELPE as our main AfL framework and its effectiveness within departments as experienced by both staff and students alike. With the evidence derived from Dylan William's keynote, I was able to contribute to this active research and feedback ideas and frameworks that are going to inevitably shift and transform our Learning and Teaching policy to bring about meaningful change. We are still in the process of deliberating the exact nature of this change and anticipating undertaking a pilot study to ascertain whether or not our ideas are feasible, workable and most importantly meaningful in clarifying the differences between AfL and Asessment for 'Performance'. However, in the meantime I would like to share my notes from the conference; an insightful article and some video extracts and podcasts for anyone interested in learning more about AfL from this important and inspirational speaker. Here are my notes:

Bexley Assessment for Lea

Here are some excellent links to enable you to read more widely about his work, research and thoughts on Assessment for Learning:

1. Inside the Black Box : An article by Paul Black and Dylan Wiliam, suggesting that formative assessment can raise standards of achievement

2 Teachers TV:  Estelle Morris talks to Dylan Wiliam, deputy director of the Institute of Education, to discuss the state of education in our schools today. Wiliam offers a radical point of view on many areas of education. In a frank conversation with the former education secretary, Wiliam reveals his thoughts on the best ways to improve education, from policy to classroom tips. He holds strong views on the current assessment system and believes that it only suits some pupils, while alienating others who are capable of achieving good results. An excellent 30 minute interview.

3. Learning and Teaching Scotland: A superb website providing a plethora of useful case-studies; examples of best practice and accessible resources including their AfL triangle model shown below:
